I was talking to a mate the other week about the cost of living/food and his weekly shopping bill as a single guy and I was blown away when he told me he spends between £150-£200. I've budgeted hard over the past 6-12 months and got my food spending down to about £50-£70 per week...which translates to about £2-£3 per meal on average for me. He must be living like a king and eating a lot of luxuries to rack up a weekly bill like that but in fairness to him he's got a much better job than me and probably gets paid a lot more too.

Probably around £3 to £4 a meal when I work it out. Chicken, rice, eggs and oats do a lot of heavy lifting and keep costs down. The bills go up fast once you start buying convenience food or eating quality cuts of meat every day. Batch cooking once or twice a week is the only way to keep it manageable.
